The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), continues to progress, with renewed focus on infrastructure, energy, and special economic zones.
- CPEC’s 10-Year Anniversary: 2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of CPEC. Since its inception, over $25 billion has been invested, primarily in energy projects. Both Pakistan and China are celebrating the long-term cooperation and mutual benefits it has brought to the region.
- Gwadar Developments: The Gwadar port remains a crucial component of CPEC. Ongoing projects include port expansion and the development of industrial zones around Gwadar. Gwadar is expected to become a regional trade hub once fully operational.
- Energy Projects: The focus has now shifted towards renewable energy, with several new solar and wind projects being considered under CPEC’s second phase. This is part of the effort to diversify Pakistan’s energy mix.

- SEZs and Industrial Cooperation: Both countries have been working on accelerating the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The Rashakai SEZ in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and others are seen as key drivers for industrialization and job creation.
- Expansion into Agriculture and IT: Phase two of CPEC emphasizes broadening cooperation into non-infrastructure sectors like agriculture, information technology, and telecommunications. This diversification aims to bring sustainable development to Pakistan.
